I had been wanting to make this for a while, and finally got the chance to for my dad's birthday. I didn't have sour cream, so I used non fat plain yogurt, and didn't have raspberries, so it was an exclusively chocolate cake. OH. MY. WORD. It was incredible. My entire family is in a happy chocolate coma right now:)

Hi! I'm wondering if I could just omit the strawberries for an exclusively chocolate ganache. Let me know if that would work of if other adjustments would be necessary. Thanks!

I agree, now that I'm older when I think of someone's birthday I think of cake, not just the fact that I get to have some but also what it will look like because off course, I always put myself in charge of making it.

The cake was divine. Unfortunately I did not have fresh raspberries for the top but was still great.

i loved your insight on birthdays. It does seem that we spend so much time trying to make our bdays big and perfect but we barely remebers them. We have little flashes and inside jokes but we never remember all the details we plan so carefully before hand. But I do love the cake and the use of a fruit in conjunction rather than just straight chocolate ! awesome job keep it up!

Hi Elissa! I know it's not your bithday, but I deduce you'll turn 19 in less than a month. Again, I had to say something about this cake. The combination of chocolate and raspberry in the ganache must be terrific. I love this cake and it has to be one of my future cooking tasks in my kitchen.

Cheers!

We did a winter version for Emma's birthday, meaning we didn't buy flown-in raspberries from halfway round the world, but stuck with good organic frozen for the ganache and substituted black and white cows from the Amish Grocery for serious crunch. Cake was so rich we never could finish it. Lovely recipe.
